The Center for Independent Living was the vision of many individuals seeking rights and inclusions for people with disabilities in an era where the Americans with Disabilities Act did not exist. On Thursday, April 14th the Center for Independent Living (CIL) invites the community to “Celebrating Independence”; honoring the work and dedication of two founding members, Mr. Dick Batchelor, former State Senator and the late Mrs. Beverly Chapman. Mr. Batchelor and Mrs. Chapman helped pave the way for Central Floridians with disabilities long before congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. The progress they made, alongside the other founding members, within our community will always be remembered and deeply appreciated. Today, CIL is driven to continue changing lives and making progress towards achieving independence for every person, of every ability. Mr. Batchelor will receive the first annual Beverly Chapman Legacy Award.

The celebration will take place at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center in Winter Park on Thursday, April 14th, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. An orange-carpet entrance will await guests as they arrive. Entering the ballroom, guests will enjoy a robust silent auction and complimentary cocktails. Dinner, provided by Pearson’s catering, and drinks will be served as honoree Dick Batchelor addresses the attendees. The Central Florida Community Arts will showcase a special tribute to life and legacy of Beverly Chapman.

CIL’s 40 years of Celebrating Independence is $125 for a single attendee, $200 for a pair, and $1,200 for a table of eight. Sponsorships are available. Funds raised from this celebratory occasion will directly contribute to CIL’s mission to create a fully inclusive community in Central Florida and continue helping men, women, seniors, and families impacted by disabilities. For more information on sponsorship, table and ticket sales contact Margaux Pagán, Development Director at 407-623-1070 x 143 or mpagagn@cilorlando.org
